As I realized that my explanation for my picture with the wide and the narrow path has become very detailed and long, I decided to write a slightly shorter version. This should give an overview of the picture and the stories it contains.
New beginning
Our story begins in the picture at the bottom left. It shows a man in tattered clothes and carrying a large sack. He is standing at a fork in the road, wondering which of the two paths he should take. One path leads to destruction, the other to eternal life. The wanderer has been walking the former path for a very long time. But instead of freeing him from his burden, this path has made it ever greater.
In desperation, he decides to try the narrow path, even though it seems less inviting than the wide path. Bent under his heavy burden and mocked by those around him, he makes his way towards the narrow gate.
But before he can go through the narrow gate, he comes to the cross. There the wanderer sees the crucified Son of God.
He understands that Jesus has paid the price for his burden and that he can let it go there at the foot of the cross. On the cross, he also sees how high the price was that Jesus had paid for him. The wanderer begins to understand God's love for him. He falls down gratefully at the foot of the cross and claims Jesus' sacrifice for himself. At that moment, his heavy burden falls from his shoulders and he is free! In addition, he is given new clothes, which represent the righteousness of Jesus. This shows that the wayfarer has laid aside his old life and is beginning a new life that is oriented towards God. Now he is ready to step through the narrow gate. With his burden and dirty clothes, he would not have been able to enter through the gate. In the same way, we must accept Jesus' sacrifice for us and receive forgiveness if we want to live a life with God.
The light from the heavenly city shines through the narrow gate. The wanderer joyfully passes through the gate. The gate stands for baptism, which symbolizes the beginning of a life with God.
The swamp of doubt
Behind the gate, a staircase leads steeply uphill. The bright light disappears and the air becomes damper and cooler. The walker climbs the stone steps and comes to the quagmire of doubt. Especially when you take your first steps with Jesus, you make great progress at the beginning, the path climbs steeply upwards. But doubts often arise, especially when it comes to experiencing God in our daily lives. Does God really listen to our prayers? Can he really help me in my situation?
Doubts can quickly cause us to slip. It's like a muddy swamp that you have to cross on slippery stones. How quickly you can slip and sink into the swamp. The stones represent Jesus, who gives us secure footing. But if we doubt his love and care, then we slip off these stones and lose our secure footing.
Community
After the hiker has safely crossed the swamp of doubt, he comes to a small forest chapel. There he experiences Christian fellowship. He worships God with other believers. By studying the Bible together and sharing their experiences, the pilgrims are encouraged and prepared for the journey ahead. The logo of the Adventist Church can be seen on the chapel, not because it is the only church that can save us, but because I have found a home there for myself and I am convinced that this church has a special message for this time.
The forest of fear
Thus encouraged, the path next leads the hiker into the forest of fear. This forest is huge and dark. Here, the hiker almost loses his life because he lets fear get the better of him. The howling of the wolves and the seemingly endless walk in the dark over the thick roots of the old trees are nerve-wracking. As the wolves come closer and are ready to attack the hiker, he loses all hope. But at that moment, he clings to God, who miraculously saves him. He now receives a light that shows him the way and leads him safely out of the forest.
We are often easily unsettled by circumstances. We look at the problems and challenges and forget far too quickly that we actually have an almighty God at our side who can protect us from everything and guide us safely. We try to solve our problems on our own and then accuse God of why he has abandoned us when we fail miserably. Only when we are completely down do we accept God's help. The cause of all fears is a lack of trust in God's omnipotence and care. We want to stay in control ourselves because we trust ourselves more than God. But God is very patient with us because he knows that we first have to learn to trust him. Even if we cannot see him, we can know that he is always by our side and has a solution ready for us.
The fork in the road
After the dark forest, the hiker can once again enjoy the warm rays of sunshine and the green meadows at the edge of the path. Here you can now decide which path you want to continue on. The path to the left promises to be a shortcut. It advertises relaxation and fun. It sounds very tempting. Because admittedly, the narrow path has not really been pleasant so far. And didn't the hiker deserve a little rest and fun after the terrible hike through the forest? The sign pointing to the right claims to be the true path that would lead to the source of joy. The hiker takes a closer look at the path on the left. He sees a deep abyss over which a solid bridge has been built. As he looks at it for a while, he sees someone coming towards him. It is a man bent down as if by an invisible burden, who approaches the hiker with a slurping step. When he reaches him, the man asks him if this is the path to the source of life. The hiker answers in the affirmative and points in the direction of the right fork in the path. „I don't think the spring is far away,“ says the hiker.
A hopeful smile covers the man's very exhausted-looking face as he slowly plods on. The hiker decides to accompany the poor man. Apparently the left-hand path is not so fun and relaxing after all. He asks the tired man what he experienced on the other path. As the two of them approach the source of life, the other hiker tells him his sad story of his journey on the wide path. The hiker recognizes many parallels to his own story. The two are engrossed in a deep conversation when they reach the source.
At the source of life
The cheerful splashing of the spring can be heard from some distance away. A pleasantly fresh atmosphere promises refreshment and rest from the exertions of the journey so far. The area around the spring is lined with lush grass and colorful, wonderfully fragrant flowers. Birds chirp their songs and feed at the spring. Chairs and loungers are provided for hikers in need of rest and relaxation. There are cups and a jug filled with spring water on a table. There is also wonderfully fragrant bread on the table, which serves as refreshment and sustenance for the pilgrims.
Full of joy, the two hikers enjoy the simple food. Water has never been as thirst-quenching and invigorating as this! Never before have the two of them eaten such delicious bread. Full and satisfied, they both rest at the spring. The wanderer who came from the broad path rests under the umbrella of the Most High. Trusting in God's care, he can enjoy protection and rest in God. Now he has found the peace he has long sought.
Jesus is the source of life. He is the water of life that quenches the thirst of the soul. He is also the bread that fills and satisfies the soul. Jesus makes himself available to his weary pilgrims as bread and water so that they can take him in and so that his strength becomes strong in their weakness. They do not have to endure the next trials in their own strength, but can draw on the fullness of God because Jesus dwells in them. Here we also have the symbolism of the Lord's Supper, in which we renew our decision for Jesus again and again. It is therefore important that we come to this source often in order to let Jesus dwell in us so that he can accomplish everything in us according to his will. The journey with God is exhausting and pushes us to our limits. But we have a source of strength that we can tap into every day in order to gain strength for the day. Unfortunately, however, we don't always use it and make our path unnecessarily difficult as a result.
Through the sea of worries
Our wanderer is now sufficiently rested and ready to continue his journey. However, his new friend needs a little more time under the umbrella of the Most High before he can continue his journey. So our wanderer continues his journey alone. He next arrives at the Sea of Sorrows. As the wanderer follows the narrow path, he is puzzled to discover that it leads directly through the sea. How is that supposed to work? There is no boat or anything similar that the traveler could use. Suddenly Jesus appears to him and invites him on an adventure. The traveler is to walk across the water with Jesus. The traveler accepts with mixed feelings. With his eyes firmly fixed on Jesus, he can actually walk safely on the water. Halfway across, the initial unease has disappeared and the hiker becomes increasingly confident. He marvels at his courage and his faith. This is so exciting! How high are the waves? Can you see the shore yet? The hiker looks curiously at the waves and the horizon. When he sees the high waves raging around him, he is overcome with fear. Just then, he begins to sink. As the waves begin to break over him, he calls out to Jesus in desperation. He is there immediately and pulls him out of the water.
The two continue their journey on the unreal ground. Now the wanderer is even closer to Jesus. His weak hand rests in Jesus' strong hand. His gaze is fixed on Jesus. Together they safely reach the other shore. Here the wanderer falls at Jesus' feet and confesses his unworthiness, his pride and his unbelief. No words of rebuke come from Jesus, for the wayfarer has learned his lesson. With a smile, he lifts the wanderer up again.
This scene is very reminiscent of Peter's experience. A moment of pride or unbelief that directs our gaze away from Jesus can have serious consequences. It is worth thinking about this even more intensively. Incidentally, this scene is my personal favorite scene from the whole picture and is also at the center of the picture. Not for nothing, because everything depends on our close, trusting relationship with Jesus. It is an important milestone in learning absolute devotion. For no man can walk on water by himself. He is completely dependent on God. We often start with God's power. But when we see how well things are going, we very quickly forget that it was God who made it happen and start to trust ourselves.
All too often, we brood over our worries, difficulties and challenges, forgetting that we are safely guided by Jesus. There is nothing that can damage our faith and our usefulness for God's work more than our worries. Because worry shows that we are in control and not God.
Dear reader, please take enough time to let this scene sink in and talk to God about it in prayer so that he can show you your heart.
The joy of the Lord!
When the wanderer has solid ground under his feet again, he continues on his way together with Jesus. Oh, how wonderful it is to be able to talk to his Savior and friend! He can finally get rid of all the questions he has wanted to ask God for so long. It is even more wonderful to listen to Jesus' gentle voice. The wanderer eagerly absorbs every single word that comes from Jesus' lips. It makes his heart happy again. The two sit down together on a bench under the colorful cherry trees. Their conversation is very intense. The hiker's heart burns with enthusiasm and happiness. He had never felt anything like this before in his life. No other experience in this world is as fulfilling as fellowship with Jesus. The hearts of the two become even more intertwined during their time together.
Jesus prepares the wayfarer for the path ahead of him. He points out the difficulties that lie ahead and gives helpful tips on how to successfully overcome them.
But at some point, the time has come to say goodbye. Both find it difficult to part from each other. But Jesus assures the wanderer that he is always by his side, even if he cannot see or feel him. Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus dwells in the heart of the wanderer and will guide him safely through all the dangers to come.
Your word is the light of my feet
Thus encouraged and strengthened, the hiker continues on his way. He leaves the beautiful meadow with the blossoming trees. A steep, massive rock face now rises up in front of him. The narrow path leads through the middle of this rock face. As the hiker approaches the narrow opening, he is met by icy, damp air. But he is well prepared! Jesus had given him a lamp to guide him through this dark gorge. Now the hiker lights this lamp. With the light flickering brightly, he enters the cave.
The path is narrow and leads steeply upwards. The hiker often slips on the slippery steps. But the light helps him to recognize the path and make his way safely through the black gorge. After what feels like an eternity, he sees light at the end of the gorge. As he steps out of the gorge, he is initially blinded by the bright rays of the sun. But its pleasant warmth is soothing after the cool dampness.
The wanderer has mastered this test flawlessly. He has chosen God's word as his lamp, whose light has guided him safely through the darkness. This ravine has no name. It simply stands for dark times in our lives. God's word can give us comfort and strength in these times when all hope seems lost.
Just as the hiker had an intense experience with God beforehand and was very close to Jesus, we sometimes feel the same way. There are situations in which we are very closely connected with Jesus, have experienced him up close and personal and which uplift our feelings. However, it is not uncommon for such special highs to be followed by a low. This can be because we return to our everyday lives and realize that we are just as much sinners as we were before the brilliant experience with God. But it can also be a stroke of fate or another difficult situation. How quickly the highs are gone and we end up in an emotional low. This is how the Christian experience becomes emotionally dependent and an emotional rollercoaster. But that is not what God wants. If we take his word as the basis for our lives and trust in it, regardless of whether we feel particularly close to God or abandoned by God, then we become emotionally stable. Because we are not relying on ourselves and our feelings, but have the firm foundation of the Word of God. It gives us stability and security. We could face many a trial more calmly if we sought strength in Bible study and prayer.
Sabbath rest
As the hiker emerges from the dark gorge, he is once again faced with a fork in the road. To his left is that deep abyss again. But the abyss is now much deeper than at the first fork in the path. Wisps of mist make the whole scene seem terrifying, sending a cold shiver down the hiker's spine. But here too, the abyss is bridged by a suspension bridge. However, the bridge is nowhere near as stable as the first one. The suspension bridge already looks very old and frail. But here, too, the hiker sees someone carefully venturing across the bridge. It is a woman. Trembling, she holds on to the side ropes of the bridge. With every step, the bridge groans dangerously and begins to sway. The hiker fears that the bridge will not hold up. But eventually the woman reaches solid ground safely. Exhausted, she collapses.
How good that the two have now arrived at the Sabbath rest. The hiker helps the woman to the resting place provided for pilgrims. There the woman lies down gratefully and comes to rest in God. The hiker makes himself comfortable under a beautiful tree. He still has his lamp, the Word of God, with him. He takes time to study these sacred lines. By studying the Bible, Jesus speaks to the hiker through the Holy Spirit. They have a similarly close fellowship as before, in the joy of the Lord.
It is the Sabbath. The hiker can rest from the exertions of his pilgrimage. They can experience communion with God in his word. The resting place is in nature, where you can also encounter God. Through Bible study and time in nature, the soul comes to rest. God knows that life in this world is exhausting and that people tend to work harder and harder, so he came up with the Sabbath. How quickly people forget God in their everyday lives and lose focus on the essentials. That is why God has set aside a day once a week that is reserved just for him. The purpose of the Sabbath is to reconnect even more with Jesus, to be filled by him and to regain our focus on the essentials. It helps us to pause and reflect on whether we are still on the right path. It was also created to serve other people and give them hope.
The hiker could experience all of this during the Sabbath rest.
The Wanderer is now facing hard times. But before things get tough, dear reader, allow yourself a short break and a few quiet minutes to think about what you have read. Where do you find yourself?
If you want to delve deeper into the story, you can reach here to the detailed explanation of the picture.
