Welcome to the journey! I wish you an exciting and insightful journey!
Our journey begins on a path that we all know. It is called „life“. In the picture, a hiker is walking along this path at the bottom left. Our walker is a man wearing ragged clothes. He is walking bent over under a heavy load. He is emaciated. This man stands for many people in this world. They carry a great invisible burden that wears them down and consumes them. It can be an infinite number of different things. Some of them are listed in the wanderer's sack. It can be guilt, fear, worry, pride, selfishness, envy, bitterness and much more. The Bible calls these things „sin“. They are all things that hurt and destroy ourselves and others. But there are also other things that can burden us. These can be illness, pain, emotional wounds, loneliness or hopelessness. I dare say that everyone carries a few of these burdens with them through life. Everyone longs for healing and inner peace. But purely human attempts often make the condition worse. In the Bible, worn-out clothing is a symbol of our own cobbled-together righteousness.
The dress of one's own righteousness
In Isaiah 64:5 we read:
„So we all became like the unclean, and all our Justice is like a stained Dress. We are all withered like the leaves, and our sins carry us away like the wind.“
People often try to appease their guilty conscience and compensate for the evil within them by doing good deeds. But the Bible compares these attempts to stained clothes or withered leaves. We cannot heal our sick heart ourselves. It is like trying to mend a rag with a rag. The fabric is already so brittle that the seams won't last long. This image is intended to illustrate the clothing of the wanderer.
The decision: Which way do I go?
At some point, our heavily laden wanderer comes to a fork in the road on his journey through life. He now has two paths in front of him that he can choose. To make the decision easier, there are signposts indicating where the two paths will lead. One path looks bright, friendly and very comfortable. Fragrant flowers delight the weary hiker. The path is nice and wide and flat. All the senses tell the hiker to take this path. But when the hiker reads where this path leads, he comes to a standstill. This path is supposed to lead to destruction? How can such a bright, inviting path have such a bad ending?

The hiker looks at the second path. It is narrower and seems a little darker. There are not so many fragrant flowers growing there. From a distance, he can see a cross and a narrow entrance. He has to admit to himself that this path looks much less inviting. Rather, it seems to require effort, toil and hardship. The hiker reads the signpost for this path. Supposedly, this path leads to eternal life. How can this be possible? The path looks anything but joy, peace and eternal happiness. The other path seems to be much more like what he is looking for. Has someone perhaps switched the signposts? How is the wanderer supposed to decide? Which path should he take?
Something has to change!
The wanderer reflects on his previous life. It was full of pain, suffering and negative experiences. All his attempts to heal his sin-sick heart have failed. All his efforts to get rid of his heavy burden ended in the exact opposite - the burden only got heavier. He had already chosen the easier path so many times, only to realize time and again that this path could not solve his problems.
We humans are all like that. We always want a quick solution that doesn't cost a lot of sacrifice. That's exactly what this world seems to offer us. But in the end, it's a vicious cycle that leaves us even more discouraged and has increased our burden.
The wanderer longs for a real solution to his problem. By now he is so desperate that he is prepared to pay any price if only he could be freed from his heavy burden! So the decision was made!
The hiker's shuffling steps lead him towards the cross.
People's lack of understanding
But the hiker is not alone on his path through life. There are many people just before the wide path. They don't understand the cross and the narrow path. They laugh at the tired hiker. They mockingly ask him whether he really wants to seek the solution to his problems on THIS path? The other way was much easier and would help him more quickly. And could he really be sure that the narrow path would end in eternal life?
The people laugh at the poor hiker and shake their heads in disbelief.
But the wanderer does not care about them. His burden weighs heavily on him. All he longs for is to be rid of it. On the way to the cross, the wanderer reads a sign: „Come here, you who are burdened“. Yes, he really was burdened! Here was someone offering him a solution to his problem! The hiker gathers the last of his strength and trudges forward, driven by the hope of finding deliverance.
Like the hiker, so it is with us. It is easy to follow the path of the masses. It seems inviting and a quick solution. But if you turn away from this path and choose the path to Jesus, you will be ridiculed by the rest of the world. Most people cannot understand how you can voluntarily choose this path. A life with God often seems restrictive and forbids any fun. It seems to consist only of sacrifice and self-denial. In contrast to the way of this world, it seems less attractive and appealing.
Which path did you choose?
But like our wanderer, there are many people who have searched long and in vain in the things of this world for the satisfaction of their deepest needs. They have had to realize that all of these things are just holey cisterns that cannot quench their thirst.
Unfortunately, it is often the case that people only come to God when they are completely devastated. Only when they have tried everything else do they turn to God.
But God is patient with us. He has placed many signs on our path through life that invite us to come to him. He often sends us messages through various circumstances that offer us his solution to our problems. The Bible says that Jesus draws all people to Himself. Every single person often feels the gentle tug of God's Spirit in their lives. Unfortunately, we often only give in to this when we have tried everything else and realized that they were dead ends.
